anybody heard of Hugh Locke?
This image is incredible. Would love to find more of his work: Hugh Locke
Praise effort
Here's an excellent article about the merits of praising effort over praising talent. Its nice to see data back up what I've seen this SO clearly in the classroom. Gifting is helpful, but umimpressive. Effort and character that is teachable - now that is impressive.

NYC subway map designer
interesting article on the NYC subway map design. especially the history - how the public reacted to maps in the 70s causing them to change them. the complexity of the NYC subway would make this a hard problem to solve. i like his point that a map can't do everything - it is limited and needs to interact with signage etc.

photographer
you can learn a lot by perusing photographer Jeremy Cowart's portfolio online.
Its a great lesson in composition. puzzle over why these are so strong. a few hints: look for negative space, point of view, and balance.
I'm sure theres lots to learn about photography here too. but i'm too busy trying to learn those myself to divulge them here. maybe somebody can enlighten me.

design thinking
Nice design article about the pervasiveness of design.
i found this at richard florida's blog, which i now frequent, called the Creativity Exchange. Florida wrote the book The Rise of the Creative Class. which i like. he writes about how creative folks choose where to live and how to live.
i also am interetsed in Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind why Right Brainers will Rule the Future, who has some similar ideas but is more about creativity in the person...thats not a good explanation. i skimmed through the book from the library but should invest in my own copy. i like it that he spoke at the big recent art education conference in NYC. about the importance of art education.
Thomas Friedman who thinks the World is Flat also overlaps with these guys. he speaks of globalization and it makes me think of the the implications for design education.
ya some great brain candy...

Portrait Party
i love it that Rama Hughes has made a blog called the Portrait Party.
in college we called them drawing parties. "because drawing is always a party" was the often mentioned tag line. in art II this year we've called them drawing deuls. at the martins house i would often do this on art night.
whatever you wanna call it, sitting around drawing my friends drawing is one of my favorites things to do in life.
