NYC subway map designer

interesting article on the NYC subway map design. especially the history - how the public reacted to maps in the 70s causing them to change them. the complexity of the NYC subway would make this a hard problem to solve. i like his point that a map can't do everything - it is limited and needs to interact with signage etc.

Bringing hip design to the masses, here's a good article re: Target. i esp. appreciate the convo about creative risk.

Nice design article about the pervasiveness of design.

i found this at richard florida's blog, which i now frequent, called the Creativity Exchange. Florida wrote the book The Rise of the Creative Class. which i like. he writes about how creative folks choose where to live and how to live.

i also am interetsed in Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind why Right Brainers will Rule the Future, who has some similar ideas but is more about creativity in the person...thats not a good explanation. i skimmed through the book from the library but should invest in my own copy. i like it that he spoke at the big recent art education conference in NYC. about the importance of art education.

Thomas Friedman who thinks the World is Flat also overlaps with these guys. he speaks of globalization and it makes me think of the the implications for design education.

+ freshly picked blueberries from the pick-your-own farm down the street

+linoleum and wood relief printmaking. so far i prefer the expressive marks i can make with the linoleum over the precision that the wood seems to favor. i have a lot to learn from the german expressionists. here is where i'm being schooled.

+dry point etching on copper plates. trying it out for the first time. the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) website has some gorgeous examples of drypoint , mostly done by Rembrandt. inspiring and informative.

+the creative process. especially in a group setting. IDEO does it so well.

+My Name is Asher Lev by Chiam Potok. a fiction account of a young boy with artistic talent, Asher Lev, growing up in a hasidic jewish family and community. i love it when his uncle tells him that his artistic gift is from the Master of the Universe. (yessss!) When Asher takes his mother to the museum and asks who the man in the paintings is, she responds, "Where your painting has brought me, Asher. To Jesus." Though she thought that a bad thing i think it pretty wonderful...art bringing people to Jesus.
